The Ceremony

We were led to the Sheldonian, and allowed to enter after our outfits had been inspected.

The ceremony began by the Master asking the Vice Chancellor of the University to accept us as students of the University in Latin.

The entire ceremony (which is only a few minutes, really) was held in Latin-  as according to the tradition. 

Originally however, students had to sit for a rigorous Latin examination in order to matriculate, to ensure that only the brightest and best students were accepted into the University. Thankfully after centralized examinations were introduced this system was done away with. 

At the end of the ceremony the new VC of the University (John Hood) encouraged us to make the most of this year- to remember that our subjects were of course of great importance, but the friends we made here, and the extra curricular activities we pursued were of equal importance. 

It was definitely a memorable moment- we now belonged here.
