It's a centuries-old tradition, where students dress up in 'sub fusc' (an academic outfit consisting of a black gown, and a pretty silly hat known as 'mortar board'), and register as official members of the University.
I had thought that the ceremony would be just another reason to dress up ridiculously and consume large quantities of free wine- most people here seem to love doing exactly that as often as they can-
but it turned out to be a great day!
