If you go through the Oxford website, it will emphatically state that your college choice does not matter- and that you shouldn't spend too much time worrying about it.
Most people I've spoken to here believed it and didn't spend too much time worrying about it while applying.
BIG MISTAKE.
Your college will play a huge role in determining the quality of your life here-
Your location, meals, and the people you spend most of your time with- and if you're an undergraduate- your tutorials, and hence your education- depends entirely on your college.
Colleges vary greatly, and each college has an entirely different way of doing things.
Some colleges are very traditional and 'posh' ( such as Merton & Balliol) while others pride themselves on being liberal and open (such as St Catz)-
The traditional colleges might have black tie dinner every night, while the newer ones might shun the practice entirely-
And of course, the crowd varies greatly from college to college:
Some are mostly international, some are very small and therefore close-knit, while others have over 700 people.
It's definitely worth paying attention to the location of your college too-
How far is it from your department? Do you want to be in the middle of city centre, or a bit further away from the masses?
